Growing Pain
So the tale of Doogie Howser, a boy genius practising medicine at the age of 16 hardly fits comfortably with Bochco’s traditional world of glitzy lawyers or tough cops. In that sense, it’s even odder than his infamous Dennis Potter-inspired musical drama Cop Rock which was at least set in Bochco’s usual milieu albeit a setting laced heavily with PCP.

Things can only get better for Dustin Hoffman, as in episode one he’s clearly the least frightening gangster since Fat Sam in Bugsy Malone. His character in Marathon Man was more intimidating than Chester Bernstein. Chester Tate from Soap was a darker character.
